It has been suggested to me that I include a bit about who I am...This would be that page!
My name is Kacy, and I live in Northern Colorado. I have spent my entire life with, and lobbying for, animals. I work at my local Humane Society, and have taken it upon myself to champion the little guys that I feel are so overlooked. I don't believe there has ever been a time when I didn't have some sort of pet in my life, from dogs and cats to hermit crabs, snakes, a parrot, and of course, RATS! Obviously, my first and favorite job is being Mo's mom, but I also give what time I can to Doberman Rescue of Colorado (an AMAZING group, doing amazing things for a breed that is horribly mis-labeled), and my rats and I currently help lead rat education classes through the Longmont Humane Society. It is so cool to get to talk to these kids and change their minds about what they have been mis-lead to believe!
If you are interested in having my ratties visit you, please contact Brianna at LHS.
MY MISCHIEF!
First of all, my daughter named all of our current rats. I have no claim to the creativity of these names, nor do I know what a "Pyeup" is!! ;-) Additionally, all of my males (or bucks) are neutered, and live in perfect harmony with my females (does). Please note how cool it is that neutered males don't mark or smell as strong as intact males. Something to consider if you aren't breeding!! They are also all litter box trained. Or at least when they want to be... ;)
Bat. This is my main man! He is social, tolerant, and an all around incredible guy! Bat has been involved in rattie classes since the begining, and is my alpha male. He is leash trained, litter box trained, and answers to his name (and the sound of the yogie jar).
Emille. This guy came to me through the humane society. He has turned out to be the most sensitive and affectionate rat I know! He has a tendency to take my "rescue" cases under his wing and care for them. Not only that, but he is SO HANDSOME (not to mention a great kisser)!
Friend. That's right, her name is Friend. She came to us quite unexpectedly, as she was one of my "pet store rescues". She was being horribly beat up by the other two females in her cage. Several weeks and many antibiotics later, and the only proof of her rough start is the scarring on her nose and feet! She isn't as social as Bat, Emille, and Pyeup, but she is very sweet!
Pyeup (pronounced pie-up). What a cutie! When she came into the humane society with her sisters, everyone knew I would end up bringing her home (including Michelle who got the random text message the morning she arrived...)! The first time she met my boys and Friend, everyone began a crazy "mass-grooming"! She is SO energetic and social, and never seems to sleep! She, too, is a kisser!
Tea. Tea is another "pet store rescue". I waited for 3 weeks, watching this guy sit alone, scared and unsocialized in his cage before I brought him home. I wasn't sure that I could add another to the group so quickly, but I finally felt there wasn't another option... He is still a bit skittish and fearful, but Emille is on it, and with his help, Tea is learning how to trust us. I think that eventually Tea will be a very social boy.
Vinnie (RIP). Vinnie was my "soul-rat". I have never loved a rat the way I loved (and miss) Vin. He was the first of the rats to do the rattie ed classes, and he is responsible for "passing the torch" to Bat. Vinnie was also known for escaping his cage and coming to sleep with me at night.
Ava (RIP). What a cool girl! Ava came to us as an old girl, immediately took on the role of "queen bee"! She refused to use the litter box, she shredded everything in her cage, and she was afraid of NOTHING! Ava made me (and others) laugh more than any other rat I know. She also helped with rattie ed classes, and did so much to change perceptions about what is beautiful in this world...
Fosters & "rescues"
I don't really have photos of many of my fosters, but since I will no doubt have more, this section will grow!
Mary Anne & Ginger Elliot and Mo
My Other Fur Children
These are the other critters that live in my home. I have trained them to annoy my husband... ;)
Ringo. (Rest peacefully, "Old Man") Aside from the severe seperation anxiety, escaping, nearly $10,000 in surgeries, uniform aggression, and peeing on the carpet, this dog is perfect! Ringo came into a vet emergency hospital I worked at many many years ago as a hit-by-car, and stole my heart immediately. Vinnie was my soul rat, but Ringo was my soul dog first. I love my lazy old man more than I love most of my family (sorry guys-you had to see it coming)! Update: Ringo finally crossed the bridge on 5/18. There will never be another dog-or friend-like him. "mourned" and "missed" don't even come close to the right words...
Mac (aka "Noodle"). Forget what you think you know about pit bulls. This dog spends his days following my daughter around and being dressed up or chased. He is exuberant, friendly, social, and very people oriented. Noodle frequently makes poor choices about what he is and is not allowed to help himself to, and enjoys baking himself on our deck in the summer. He also tends to smell like a deer. Can you think of any reason NOT to love this guy!? Me neither!
Julian. I have many other photos of him, but this one cracks me up! Like his brother, Mac, Julian likes to bake on the back deck. He is a tiny (lot) bit overweight, but we love him anyway. He also can be found wearing children's clothing, and sleeping with his girl at night. He will eat nearly anything, which leads me to believe that he has been brainwashed by the dogs...
