Gerbils

Gerbils are smart and much more social than hamsters. They are communal, nocturnal, active, and playful.
Housing: A large aquarium is good for 2-3 same-sex litter mates. Gerbils enjoy jumping and climbing, so a lid is a must! use a sandy soil for the cage-they are desert dwellers and love to tunnel! If you need to use a commercial litter, a care-fresh type is preferable.
Handling: Gerbils need to be handled from a young age so they get used to it. They also need to be handled daily to maintain their sociability.
Feeding: Use commercial gerbil diet and supplement the diet with fresh veggies in moderation. They like carrots, apples, alfalfa, and dandelions. Since they need a bit more protein, an occasional dog biscuit is a nice treat! Don’t forget wood to keep their teeth filed down!
Exercise: Gerbils will use a wheel, but prefer to tunnel, jump and chew, so toys that allow them to do these things are best (toilet paper tubes work great).
Health: Gerbils will live 3-4 years. They prefer warmer climates, but too much moisture is not ideal for them.
